About Learn Urdu Free

Learn Urdu Free is a free website for people who want to read, write and speak Urdu, especially children and parents in Pakistani families living in the UK, USA and Canada, and Hindi speakers who want to learn the Urdu script.

What you will find here

• Short lessons on the alphabet, sounds, numbers, everyday words, phrases, grammar and reading, with new lessons added every week.
• Alphabet cards with audio for every letter.
• Printable PDF worksheets for tracing letters, vocabulary and numbers.
• Writing tools: an Urdu keyboard you can use with English keys, and a tool that turns Urdu text into a Nastaliq image.

How the lessons are written

Every lesson shows Urdu in Nastaliq script, Roman Urdu so you can say it straight away, and the English meaning. Roman Urdu has no single official spelling, so we use simple, common spellings (for example aap, shukriya, kitaab).

The alphabet audio on this site is computer-generated. We plan to replace it with recordings by native speakers.

Is it really free?

Yes. The lessons, alphabet cards, worksheets and tools are free to use, with no account and no subscription.
